Not Turning a Blind Eye

Walking down the streets of Belize City you will come across multiple homeless scattered around. When a caucasian missionary first arrives it can feel a little daunting because you are easily asked for money 20 times as you walk from Water Walkers to the grocery store a few blocks away.

But then they get use to seeing your white face and they soon realize you are not someone coming off a cruise ship with pockets full of money. So instead of asking for money you begin developing a relationship with them. They begin to share their stories and soon as you pass by them each day smiles are exchanged.

As a caucasian missionary it is vital to know what your piece is to play while you serve in Belize City. Yes there is need everywhere you go and as a missionary you have a soft heart wanting to help everyone. But sometimes helping people looks different than you might expect. This means your responsibility is to ask the Lord,

“What is my part to play here?”

“Am I to give money or is it my time to hear someone out?”

“Or is there something else I am to do?”

As a longterm missionary burn out can come if you are not careful to listen to the Holy Spirit. Because need is everywhere but it is not your job to fix it all. Instead it’s your job to know what the Lord is saying and to do that.

We at Water Walkers would love for you to also pray and ask the Lord if you are to serve along side us. Your compassion can transform and inspire those around you!
